Jack McGuiness winner of the Ferdinand Zweig Award talks about his experiences whilst travelling in Cuba ‘Immersion in a foreign system of values and beliefs. No advertising pedaling the latest smart phone or big mac. Instead in the breaks between shows on the television there are clips of people say how important it is to them to have trees in urban areas. Sustainability has been forced upon Cuba, sprouting (through necessity) profoundly productive schemes in waste reduction, recycling and food production as well as tackling issues of racial, gender and class equality. Throughout my 5 weeks in Cuba I was constantly surprised, intrigued, challenged and inspired. The closed loop, self-sustaining system of Cuba, where diversity and natural beauty are highly valued has ignited my imagination and heavily influenced my design work and ethics.’
